Unattended cooking is the leading cause of home fires worldwide. Preventing kitchen fires requires a combination of active cooking habits, safe workspace layout, and gas or electrical maintenance.
1. Active Cooking Habits
- Never leave boiling, frying, or grilling unattended. If you must step away from the kitchen, turn off the stove.
- Keep pot handles turned inward, point handles toward the back or side of the stove so they cannot be bumped or snagged by loose clothing.
- Manage oil temperature carefully, Heating oil past its smoke point leads to auto-ignition. If oil begins to smoke, turn off the heat immediately.
- Roll up sleeves & secure loose hair, loose clothing, aprons, and long hair can easily catch fire when leaning over burners.
2. Workspace Management & Clearance
Maintain a 3-Foot (1-Meter) clearance zone, keep oven mitts, wooden utensils, paper towels, dish cloths, and food packaging far away from heat sources.
Clean grease deposits regularly, grease build-up on burners, drip pans, range hoods, and back-splashes serves as secondary fuel during a flash fire. Clean grease traps regularly.
Keep a metal lid nearby. Always keep a matching metal lid or Fire Blanket next to the stove while frying or cooking with oil. If a small grease fire starts, slide the lid over the pan and shut off the heat.
3. Gas & Electrical Safety
System
Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG)
Electrical Appliances
Safety Actions
- Check hoses, regulators, and seals for cracks or leaks using soapy water.
- Keep gas cylinders upright in a well-ventilated area.
- Turn off the cylinder valve when the stove is not in use.
- Unplug high-wattage counter-top appliances (air fryers, toaster ovens, kettles) when not in use.
- Replace frayed power cords or damaged plugs immediately.
- Avoid plugging multiple high-draw appliances into a single power strip.
Emergency Preparedness
- Install a Class K or Multi-Purpose ABC Extinguisher: Keep the extinguisher near the kitchen exit – not directly next to the stove, where flames might block access.
- Never Use Water on a grease fire. Water vaporizes instantly in hot grease, causing a massive fireball expansion.
- Keep a fire blanket close
- In case of an Oven Fire: Keep the door closed, turn off the heat source, and allow the fire to suffocate inside.
Practice safe cooking habits every day.
